10 Key Things to Look For in a Good Web Designer

The pace of business today is positively supersonic. There doesn’t seem to be enough time for anything anymore, and businesses of all sizes are working harder and faster all the time.

It’s important to work smarter, too. And that means when you have to choose an important vendor for an essential service, you need to slow down and make a deliberate, careful decision. This is particularly important when you are getting ready to put your company’s face on the World Wide Web in a new or newly-refurbished web site.

Before listing the ten key things to look for in a good web designer, let’s define a few terms. Even though you may encounter variants on the name – like web developer, web artist, webmaster and so forth - we’re talking about an individual who, alone or with some assistance, is going to “get you up and running.” This means more than simple design.

You may need someone who can help you conceive and write copy. You may need someone who can plan smart site structure. You may need help getting a domain registered, files uploaded, e-mail accounts set up, and other technical details. You will definitely need someone who can do just about anything, or quickly find out how, or have an associate who can at the ready.

With these caveats, and serious encouragement to shop around for price and professionalism, here are the ten things to look for, in rough order of importance:

1) Experience
You will need someone with all the techniques, tools and tricks that will help you prepare your web site and accomplish your online goals. You should confirm that the candidate knows the entire alphabet soup of protocols, web markup languages and coding utilities: HTML, XML, CSS, PHP and so on. Ask all prospects for a portfolio, ask if they can “hand code,” find out how many years of experience each has, etc.

When you interview designers, on the phone and/or in person, you will get these answers swiftly enough. But take due time to get more important insights as to the individual’s character, level of expertise - and how well your personalities mesh. You will be working closely together, after all. People with GERD More Likely to Develop Asthma

The first evidence linking gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and asthma has been discovered by Duke University Medical Center researchers.

An association between the two conditions was first noted in the 1970s, and since then studies have shown that between 50 percent and 90 percent of asthma patients also experience GERD symptoms. But the actual link between GERD and asthma hasn’t been clear.

In experiments with mice, the Duke team found that inhaling tiny amounts of stomach fluid that back up into the esophagus — a hallmark of GERD — can cause immune system changes that lead to asthma.

The researchers placed miniscule amounts of gastric fluid into the lungs of mice over an eight-week period. When exposed to allergens, the immune systems of these mice responded differently than those of mice that didn’t have gastric fluid in their lungs. Read more…

Women’s 4×100m Freestyle Relay: Netherlands take gold

(BEIJING, August 10) — The Netherlands confirmed their dominance of the Womens’ 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay by winning the Beijing 2008 Olympic title at the National Aquatics Center on Sunday.

With the same team that broke the world record for the event in March, Inge Dekker, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Femke Heemskerk and Marleen Veldhuis pulled themselves up from a poor first two legs and seventh place at one stage, to go on to win the gold medal comfortably from the United States by more than half a second.

After a poor first leg from Dekker, Kromowidjojo and Heemskerk began to pull back Germany, USA and China. Heemskerk and Veldhuis in particular overpowered the field, with Veldhuis registering a quick final leg split of 52.58 to give the Netherlands a winning time of 3:33.76. Read more…

A Turkish theater for World War III

By Chan Akya

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf is on record stating his ambitions to make his country a modern and secular state modeled on the Turkish republic under Kemal Ataturk. Ironically, even as that goal appears mind bogglingly unachievable for Pakistan, recent events will conspire to push Turkey in the direction of Pakistan; into becoming a breeding ground for a new class of Islamic militants. The transition of Turkey into a new front for Saudi interests will follow typical ideological, strategic and political trends.

The age-old rivalry of the House of Saud with Turkey, which saw the overthrown of the Ottoman Empire from the lands of what is now Saudi territory, helps create enough energy and urgency for the latest Saudi enterprise. It is no mere coincidence that the Saudis need a functioning Sunni army to counter the likely expansionism of Iran, a matter that they simply cannot risk leaving to the putative next president of the United States, Democratic Senator Barrack Obama.

James Dean has been dead for 53 years in September 30

James Dean has been dead for 53 years. That’s hard to imagine, just as it’s hard to imagine that he was ever alive, at least alive in the normal sense of occupying space and being in only one place at any given time. These mundane facts — life, death, time, space — are hard to reconcile with the whole Dean package, the talent, the legend and the iconography that have accumulated around his memory in the years since his fatal smash-up on Sept. 30, 1955.

He was in a race, and today he reaches the finish line. He should have been 74 years old and contemplating his mortality. Instead he is 53 years dead and entering classic immortality. He never heard the Beatles. He probably never heard of Jack Kennedy, read Jack Kerouac or listened to Elvis. He is from another time. He wouldn’t recognize us, and though we think we know him, we don’t really. Not completely. There’s something there. We keep going back, and Dean remains, always giving, always revealing and always, somehow, elusive.
